Though the sanitary emergency due to Covid-19 is continuing, the VI edition of the International Workshop for Young Composers is confirmed and will take place as follows:

– the rehearsals of the pieces both for ensemble and solo instrument will take place in Milan, Fabbrica del Vapore. Only Divertimento Ensemble’s Artistic and Musical Director, M° Sandro Gorli, the ensemble and the soloists will be in presence. The selected composers will be able to participate in the rehearsals from remote (in streaming and/or with recordings). They will be enabled to share with M° Gorli and the soloists your comments
– Liza Lim’s and Stefano Gervasoni’s lectio magistralis and individual lessons will be organized from remote
– should the final live concerts with audience attending not be possible, Divertimento Ensemble committs itself to the performance of the same behind closed doors, with live streaming on its Facebook page.

Applications are open for admission to IDEA – Divertimento Ensemble’s Sixth International Workshop for Young Composers (compositions for ensemble and solo instrument).
Up to 12 students will be selected with a composition for ensemble and up to 6 students with a composition for solo instrument.
Interested composers, born after July 4th, 1985, should fulfill no later than December 22nd, 2019 the form available online.

In the enrollment form you will be asked to specify if you wish to participate in the workshop with a composition for ensemble or solo instrument.
You’ll be allowed to both choices; in this second option preference will be given to the composition for ensemble, subject to availability.
You’ll be also asked to attach:
– a score (pdf ) for a musical ensemble from 1 to 15 performers
– a recording of the submitted score (if available)
– copy of the passport or identity card (pdf)
Fulfilled the application form you’ll be addressed to the PayPal page to pay the enrollment fee of € 30 (This fee will only be reimbursed in case the course is cancelled.)

A jury composed by the two tutors of the workshop together with two musicians of Divertimento Ensemble and their conductor will select no later than January 10th, 2020 the twelve composers admitted with a composition for ensemble and the six composers admitted with a composition for solo instrument.

Composers admitted with a composition for ensemble will be asked to write a composion for ensemble of minimum five performers, included among the following instruments: flute (also piccolo, alto flute and bass flute), clarinet (also also E flat and bass clarinet), violin, viola, cello, piano and percussions (vibraphone, glockenspiel, crotales, 3 suspended cymbals, tam tam, 3 tom, bass drum, 3 wood block, small percussion to be agreed).
Composers will be asked to deliver the score of the piece with which they will participate in the workshop no later than May 15th, 2020.

Composers admitted with a composition for solo instrument will be asked to write a composion for solo instrument, to be chosen among the three indicated by IDEA – Divertimento ensemble, among the following: flute (also piccolo, alto flute and bass flute), clarinet (also also E flat and bass clarinet), violin, viola, cello, piano and percussions (vibraphone, glockenspiel, crotales, 3 suspended cymbals, tam tam, 3 tom,bass drum, 3 wood block, small percussion to be agreed).
Composers will be asked to deliver the score of the piece with which they will participate in the workshop no later than May 15th, 2020.

The pieces, whose duration must not exceed 7 minutes, can be a new composition written specifically for the workshop, or an existing composition (including the one that has been submitted if in line with the instrumental ensemble and the give instruments in case of solo composition.

The duration of the workshop is 9 days for the composers admitted with score for ensemble and 7 days for the composers admitted with score for solo instrument (the latter will be given the opportunity of staying for the whole period with no extra fees).

During the workshop, participants will have individual lessons with the two tutors and with the conductor of the ensemble to discuss their scores or other pieces, they shall listen to the rehearsals of their own work and of all the programmed pieces. They will participate in the scheduled masterclasses.

All the compositions will be performed in three public concerts:
-compositions for solo instrument on July 10th
-compositions for ensemble on July 11th and 12th
Up to a maximum of two compositions for ensemble and two compositions for solo instrument will further be selected by the tutors, the conductor and the performers of the ensemble to be included in the Rondò 2021 concert season (Milan, January-June 2021).

It is possible to take part in the workshop in the workshop as observers.

The workshop overall schedule foresees the following time/activities to be divided among all the participants (in part at different hours and in part overlappying):
-40 hours of rehearsal with the ensemble (to be devided among all the scores)
-12 hours of rehearsal with the performers of the solo instruments (to be devided among all the scores)
-36 hours of individual lessons with each of the two tutors (to be divided among all the participants)
-4 hours of individual meetings with the conductor of the ensemble (to be divided among all the participants)
-2 hours of “lectionmagistralis” by each of the two tutors

Participation Fee
Workshop for ensemble: 750 euros (to be paid in two installments: February 5th and March 30th 2020)
Workshop for solo instruments: 500 euros (to be paid withinFebruary 5th 2020)
Observers: 100 euros (to be paid within July 3rd)
